What remote online notarization is
Remote online notarization — often shortened to RON — is a notarial act performed over live audio-video communication instead of across a table. Nevada authorized it under NRS 240.181 through 240.206, and it carries the same legal weight as a traditional in-person notarization when performed correctly.
Three things make it valid rather than just a video call: the notary must hold an active Nevada commission and be physically located in Nevada during the session; your identity must be verified through credential analysis and knowledge-based authentication rather than a visual glance at your ID; and the entire session must be recorded and retained under Nevada's record-keeping rules.
The finished document comes back as a tamper-evident electronic file with an electronic notarial certificate and digital certificate attached. Altering the document after the fact breaks the seal visibly, which is what gives the receiving party confidence in it.

Questions about online notarization
Do I have to be in Nevada to use remote online notarization?
No. Nevada law requires the notary to be physically located in Nevada during the session. The signer can be anywhere — another Nevada city, another state, or traveling. What matters is that the notary is in Nevada and that the document is acceptable to whoever will receive it.
What technology do I need?
A device with a working camera and microphone (a laptop, tablet, or recent smartphone), a reliable internet connection, and your unexpired government-issued photo ID. No software to install — the session runs in your browser.
How does identity verification work?
Nevada RON uses credential analysis of your photo ID plus knowledge-based authentication — a short set of questions generated from public records that only you are likely to answer correctly. The session is recorded and retained as required by Nevada law.
Which documents cannot be notarized online?
Wills and codicils are the most common exclusion, and some counties, lenders, and foreign governments will not accept an electronically notarized document even when Nevada law permits it. Always confirm with the receiving party before booking.
